NFL sets 2022 salary cap at $208.2 million

The NFL’s salary cap for the 2022 season has been set at $208.2 million, the league announced on Monday.

The spending limit jumped from $182.5 million, which represented a reduction from the $198.2 million limit of 2020.

The salary cap is determined by the previous year’s revenue. COVID-19 hit the league’s coffers hard in 2020 thanks largely to the inability to have fans in the stands in most stadiums during the season.

The league and NFL Players Association agreed to spread the losses of the 2020 season out over several seasons to help lessen the blow felt in spending during the offseason of 2021.

This year’s increase marks the first time that NFL teams have operated with a salary cap that exceeds $200 million.
