Welcome to April. It’s is officially NFL draft month and with every passing day we get closer and closer to seeing some former college football stars get paid and possibly become stars. I wanted to take a deep dive into the majority of the familiar names from the Big Ten in the upcoming class.
Today I wanted to take a look at the former Big Ten gunslingers that could hear their names called during the 2022 NFL draft and try and project which round they may get taken. This year there aren’t too many former Big Ten quarterbacks in the class, but it is still exciting to pay attention to.
So, let’s get to all the fun.
Jack Coan, Wisconsin/Notre Dame
Wisconsin Badgers quarterback Jack Coan (17) throws an incomplete pass in the third quarter during Oregon’s 28-27 win over the Wisconsin Badgers in the 2020 Rose Bowl game Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020, in Pasadena, Calif. Wisconsin had 4 turnovers in the game. RICHARD WOOD/USA TODAY NETWORK/MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL ORG XMIT:
The Skinny
It looked like Wisconsin may have made a mistake by letting Jack Coan walk because he led Notre Dame to 11 wins during his only season as a transfer rental. Coan is a very solid quarterback who may not win you any games, but he won’t necessarily lose them either. He checks enough NFL boxes to warrant a serious look and potentially earn some meaningful time in the league.
Coan is a first read guy and that can work at Notre Dame, but he will need to develop the ability to locate the open guy at the next level. I would never classify him as someone with a high ceiling, but he also has a fairly consistent floor and does what he does well enough to keep teams in the game. Coan is a classic drop-back passer with a quick release.
Projection: 3rd/4th Round
