247Sports provides update on Texas’ quarterback competition

There are a handful of position battles occurring during Texas’ spring practices, but none more important than the quarterback competition.

Hudson Card is looking to fend off the former No. 1 overall prospect in the country, Quinn Ewers. Ewers etched his name in college football history by deciding to forgo his senior season of high school to cash in on major NIL deals at Ohio State. However, due to being buried on the depth chart after C.J. Stroud’s successful season, Ewers decided to transfer to Texas with hopes of more playing time.

This is Card’s second season in Sarkisian’s offense which seems to be giving him an early advantage over Ewers. Many believe that once Ewers feels more comfortable in the offense it will only be a matter of time before he supplants himself atop the depth chart.

Chris Hummer of 247Sports detailed how Ewers and a handful of other quarterbacks have been performing during spring practices thus far, and touched on what needs to be improved on in order for him to thrive. Here’s what Hummer had to say about the Texas quarterback competition.

Many of the first-team reps at quarterback this spring have gone to Ewers’ competition, Hudson Card, who is a former top-100 recruit and started Texas’ 2021 season opener. But one source recently told 247Sports that Steve Sarkisian and the Texas staff are thrilled with Ewers’ progress and think he’s better than advertised.

In order to end up as the starter, Ewers needs to continue to learn the system and be consistent. Sarkisian sees consistency and steady decision-making as critical traits for his starting quarterback. Texas did not get that last season, from Card or Casey Thompson, but the sense in Austin this offseason is Texas’ QB room is in better shape. Don’t be surprised if you continue to hear Card’s name heavily in consideration to be the Week 1 starter – and he’s been really good this spring, per sources –  but I still think this will ultimately be Ewers’…
