USC has to look everywhere for a defensive boost

The USC Trojans are just a few days from their spring game. While the coaching staff tries to develop players, the reality in the background has not changed: The Trojans’ defense is not where it needs to be for the 2022 season.

This is less a commentary on players not making progress — it seems the guys being coached by Alex Grinch and his colleagues are moving forward — and much more a reflection of the lack of depth currently in the program.

You have been told quite often that Lincoln Riley expects a lot more portal additions after the spring game. Players not yet on the USC roster could be important parts of the defense by the time Week 1 arrives in early September. So much of the roster has not yet come into focus.

All of this underscores the biggest need for USC on defense: depth.

Yes, if you were to ask about a specific position group, the defensive line needs reinforcements more than the secondary. Yet, that misses the larger point. Comparing whether the D-line or the secondary needs more help is less urgent than getting more bodies into all areas of the defense. Replenishing the roster — stocking the shelves — is the biggest concern.

We talked about this with Mark Rogers on his USC YouTube channel at The Voice of College Football:
