Texas transfer LB target Caleb Johnson announces commitment to Miami

The Texas Longhorns will need to look elsewhere for help at the linebacker position after missing on another transfer portal target.

UCLA linebacker Caleb Johnson, who was at one point a Longhorn for a cup of coffee, announced on Friday that he will be transferring to Miami.

Johnson played in three games for Texas in 2019 before deciding to enter the portal and transfer to UCLA. While with the Bruins, he proved to be a very productive player starting 17 games over the last two seasons, where he recorded 89 tackles, two interceptions and 5.5 sacks.

Missing out on Johnson’s commitment hurts Texas’ chances at adding much needed depth at linebacker, which has been a major area of concern for Texas. The Longhorns were constantly gashed in the run game last season. The defense ranked No. 114 in rushing defense out of 130, as they gave up over five yards per carry.

The Longhorns were bested by former head coach Charlie Strong and Miami for Johnson’s services, as Johnson was deciding between Miami and Texas for where he would continue his playing career.
