Alex Grinch knows the portal will be a huge priority next week

USC has to look everywhere for a defensive boost

There’s no need for any elaborate explanation here: College football transfers who want to be able to play this season must enter the portal by May 1. That simple fact tells you that a portal avalanche is coming. USC knows it needs to load up.

Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch had plenty to say to Antonio Morales of The Athletic about the Trojans’ approach and what they are looking for.

“There are a lot of individuals who want to be USC Trojans,” Grinch said. “So it’s not just bringing in bodies to fill the roster. I mean, there are days out here when you’re down numbers and you’d give anything for more bodies, but obviously that’s not the standard.

“The biggest thing from an upgrade standpoint, speed is obviously the biggest thing. Size would be 1A. Are they an individual that’s going to be able to produce this fall? So the ability to pick up scheme and those things. Have they played college football before? If they haven’t, you’re probably better off waiting until January in terms of getting another young guy in type of thing if they can’t help you this fall. I think all those things kind of go into it. How many years of eligibility do they have left?

“I mean, there’s not a position on defense where we wouldn’t entertain the opportunity at minimum in the name of competition and other scenarios an opportunity to see the field right away, so we’ll look at all those things. But certainly it’s an opportunity that wasn’t presented to us in years past, so we’ll be active.”
