Byron Cardwell missing the Spring Game doesn’t affect his camp

It was nice to see the progress everyone in the Oregon football program made in the off-season. Players such as quarterback Ty Thompson, receiver Dont’e Thornton and defensive end DJ Johnson look like they are more ready to contribute in 2022 than they have in the past.

One player that showed tremendous progress, but didn’t get to show it in front of the estimated 42,000 people at the Spring Game was tailback Byron Cardwell.

According to offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham, we all missed out on something cool.

“(He’s been) phenomenal. Byron did a great job for us this spring. I think he had a scrimmage where he had like 170 yards or something like that where he just went off,” Dillingham said. “So I think he did a good job and I’m fired up to see him this fall after watching a little bit.”

The 6-foot, 210-pounder was probably scheduled to redshirt last season but was thrown into the fray when CJ Verdell was injured. Cardwell moved into the back-up spot behind Travis Dye. Now with Verdell and Dye out of the program, the RB1 job is definitely up for grabs.

Although he was sat out of the Spring Game because of precautionary reasons, it sounds like Cardwell is ready to be that starting tailback in 2022.
