The NFL draft has lost some meaning this year for a couple of reasons. First, the draft just isn’t as exciting at the top as it has been. Without any clear quarterbacks at the top and no real exciting “can’t miss prospects,” the focus has become more on the depth at certain positions. Wide receiver and edge rusher stand out to me while others see the great talent on the offensive line and secondary.
For the Cleveland Browns, the loss of three draft picks due to trades, including their first-rounder. also takes a little luster off the draft event. The team still has three picks in the top 100 to get impact players as well as a few later picks.
Here are some of the things I am hearing while enjoying a little time in Las Vegas before the draft:
Clowney Return
As noted in a number of places, Jadeveon Clowney is expected to return to Cleveland. The team can’t exactly plan around it publicly but privately are doing so. Anything can change but other teams also believe Clowney and the Browns have an understanding.
What is not known is how long the contract is for. Most assume it is at least a two-year deal with a third-year option possible. If it is only one year, Cleveland may be more aggressive in adding a defensive end in the draft.
The addition of Clowney will not stop the team from drafting another edge player but gives them more flexibility.

Not surprising given that he is still on the market but I’m told the contract Jarvis Landry will sign, either in Cleveland or with New Orleans, won’t be much more than the league minimum. It is likely it will be advertised at a higher number than is real.
For both teams in the running for his service, the draft could change things and leave him without either option.
Like Clowney, Landry wouldn’t return if Baker Mayfield returned as the team’s starter as noted by Albert Breer…
