2022 NFL draft: Malik Willis scouting report

One of the more polarizing prospects in the 2022 NFL draft, Liberty quarterback Malik Willis will look to stabilize his meteoric rise up draft boards with his dynamic style of quarterback play.

Strengths

Willis has legitimate arm strength to cut through weather conditions, squeeze throws into tight windows, or deliver rainbow balls deep down the field. His release is tight and fast, leading to excellent RPO opportunities and quick timing passes. He has touch that remains understated due to his receivers dropping balls and better defensive backs winning routes, but Willis consistently delivers high-level downfield/mid-field layered throws.

He can throw at any angle, and when flushed from the pocket, Willis can deliver off-balance throws from awkward positions, and still find his target.

Willis’ athleticism can’t be ignored, as he is a legitimate threat to score with his legs from anywhere on the field. He can make quick, slashing cuts, with multiple gears that allow him to hit a hole and go. That same athleticism allows him to evade pressure and prolong pockets consistently.

He’s an obvious leader and lover of the game. You can see Willis’ team rallies around him, and he often picks teammates up emotionally and physically. He always looks like he’s enjoying what is doing, like a kid on the field.

Weaknesses

Willis needs to work on his pocket awareness, as he routinely abandons clean pockets either to run or extend a play, leading to unnecessary pressure and sacks. He will need to develop a better feel for what’s around him and read the field, as well as register an internal clock.
