Special teams depth chart before the NFL draft

We’ve already given our projected offensive and defensive depth chart predictions for the Denver Broncos ahead of the NFL draft, and special teams is all that remains now.

Given that there are just three positions dedicated solely to special teams, this projection is short. Let’s get to it!

Kicker: Brandon McManus

McManus’ job is safe, but the Broncos might bring in a camp leg. In case of injuries (or illness), Denver usually has a fallback kicker on call, and they’ve even carried a kicker on the practice squad at times in the past.

Long snapper: Jacob Bobenmoyer

Bobenmoyer’s done a fine job, but the Broncos could bring in some competition this summer. Bobenmoyer has snapped for all 33 games over the last two seasons.

Punter: Sam Martin

The Broncos already have competition on the roster for Martin in Corliss Waitman, and Denver might even consider drafting a punter if one of the top prospects falls to them late in the draft.

Martin’s numbers were pretty good last year (42.8 net yards per punt), but he’ll have the sixth-highest salary cap hit among punters this season ($2,733,334). If the Broncos want to maximize cap space, switching punters make be considered this summer.

Returner: Kendall Hinton

Diontae Spencer served as Denver’s primary returner from 2019-2021 but he’s currently a free agent and it doesn’t appear that the Broncos will re-sign him. Hinton would likely be the top in-house candidate to replace Spencer in 2022.

Other players on the roster with return experience include Tyrie Cleveland and Mike Boone. Denver will likely add several return candidates through the draft and/or college free agency.
