Biggest surprises from Day 2

With two days of the 2022 NFL draft in the books, we have witnessed a draft that could have ripple effects on the league for years to come.

After just one quarterback coming off the board on Day 1, three more were selected in the midst of Friday’s action. A run on wide receivers in Round 2 and a handful of top defensive talent dropping down boards highlighted the rest of the activity that took place in Las Vegas.

Here are some of the biggest surprises to take place on Day 2 of this year’s draft:

Top QBs drop to Round 3

The biggest surprise of the 2022 NFL draft has been the rapid descent of several quarterbacks. Liberty quarterback Malik Willis falling out of Round 1 was surprising enough, but to see him tumble all the way to the Titans with the No. 86 overall pick was baffling.

Willis will be given the chance to develop under Ryan Tannehill, with the Liberty star presumably manning the helm down the stretch. It may seem odd to assume that a third-round rookie will be an NFL team’s future starter, but the expectation is certainly warranted with Willis. From his powerful arm to his elite athletic ability, a very strong argument could be made that Willis’ upside is the best of any quarterback in the 2022 draft.

Desmond Ridder and Matt Corral also fell victim to their respective draft stock dropping, with both quarterbacks landing outside of the top-70 picks. Ridder ended up with Atlanta, where he’ll have the chance to sit under Marcus Mariota, while Corral will fight with Sam Darnold for a starting quarterback job with the Panthers.
