What did Joe Schoen’s trades net the New York Giants?

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen wanted to take as many swings as he could heading into the 2022 NFL draft.

When the draft began, the Giants and Schoen had nine selections and two were used on the first night in Round 1. But when the second night of the draft began, Schoen quickly earned the nickname “Trader Joe” because he was busy making deals.

“We had deals in place before the draft started. So we were confident. We knew we could move back. That was part of the plan,” Schoen told reporters. “We had a couple deals in place, and then the one at 38 wasn’t necessarily in place, but it was something that we had talked about we would potentially be able to do, and then we were able to do it.”

The Giants began the second round with the No. 36 overall pick but they sent that to the team they share MetLife Stadium with, the New York Jets. In return, the Jets sent the No. 38 and No. 146 overall picks to the Giants.

The Jets went on to select running back Breece Hall.

When the Giants were put back on the clock, the Atlanta Falcons came calling and made the deal to acquire the No. 38 pick in exchange for No. 43 and No. 114. The Falcons then used that pick to land pass rusher Arnold Ebiketie.

When the smoke cleared, the Giants took that original No. 36 pick and turned it into three picks. After trading twice in the second round, the Giants ended up with Kentucky wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson with the No. 43 overall pick.

With the No. 114 overall pick, the Giants landed Iowa safety Dane Belton. And with the No. 146 overall pick that they got from the Jets, which was the first of three fifth-round picks Schoen had, New York selected Indiana linebacker Micah McFadden.
