How Texas broke my heart three times

I don’t know what I’m more excited about 36 hours later. Ochaun Mathis signing with Nebraska or the fact that the Huskers beat out the Texas Longhorns for his services. These feelings come with good reason. Several of my most painful memories as a college football fan have occurred due to the Longhorns. Most Nebraska fans view Oklahoma, Colorado, or Iowa with rivalry disdain. I view Texas that way, more than any team in college football, nay all of sports. It’s irrational to have such strong feelings about a team that Nebraska hasn’t played since 2010, but I do, so here we are. In a span of four years, that team from Austin left a memorable mark negatively on my Husker fandom. Let’s take a look at the three most heartbreaking losses Nebraska has suffered at the hands of Texas during my time cheering for the Big Red. I’m already regretting this list.

1996: Texas defeats Nebraska in the first Big 12 title game

In 1996 Nebraska was ranked as the pre-season #1 team in college football and was coming off two straight National Championships. Then on September 21st, the Cornhuskers visited Tempe to play the Arizona State Sun Devils and did something they hadn’t done since the 1993 Orange Bowl, they lost. ASU and quarterback Jake Plumber were in the midst of a memorable season in school history. The Sun Devils were en route to a Pac-10 title and a Rose Bowl birth.

There’s no such thing as a good loss, but there can be an inevitable loss. It was only a matter of time before the Husker’s winning streak ended, and that day it did end, at 26 straight games won. After the loss, Nebraska would run the table the rest of the regular season and win the Big 12 North title to qualify for the first Big 12 Championship…
