5 things to know about rookie CB Marcus Jones

With their selection in the third round, the New England Patriots selected cornerback Marcus Jones out of Houston.

Jones played the role of Swiss Army knife for the Cougars in college. He was a kickoff returner in addition to a corner — and even receiver, at times.

Jones could fit many needs for the Patriots. With the departures of J.C. Jackson as well as wide receiver and kickoff returner Gunner Olszewski,  Jones could find himself playing several roles for this Patriots team. He excelled in both the secondary and in his role as a kickoff returner college.

Today, we take a look at five things to know about Marcus Jones.

Jones burst onto the collegiate scene

Jones made an immediate impact as soon as he entered the college football ranks. As a freshman in 2017, he was named the 2017 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year. He was also an ESPN Freshman All-American recipient as a kickoff returner.

Jones played at Troy his freshman year. He recorded 30 kickoff returns for 879 yards and three touchdowns. As a punt returner, he received the ball 14 times for 121 yards.

He found his niche early on as a specialist, and that was something he was able to hang his hat on throughout his collegiate career. In addition to being a corner, his special teams versatility is something that may be beneficial to the Patriots.

Jones began to step up as a ball hawk following his transfer to Houston after the 2018 season. He recorded five interceptions, and tallied 47 tackles in the 2021 season. He also forced a fumble as well.

Jones had a productive year as a kick returner as well. He recorded 13 kickoff returns for 510 yards and two touchdowns. That amounted to 34 yards per return. He also tallied 26 punt returns…
