USC had only three players taken in the 2022 NFL draft. Yet, the rest of the Pac-12, save for UCLA with six selections, didn’t do very well, either.
One program which was particularly light on drafted players: Oregon, coached by Mario Cristobal. The Ducks produced only one drafted player this year.
In 2022, Cristobal will coach the Miami Hurricanes, but even though he is now out of the Pac-12, it is well worth considering whether Oregon’s draft results point to Cristobal himself or other factors.
Ducks Wire studied this question.
Are Oregon’s players not big/strong/physical/talented enough to earn a draft spot by NFL standards? If so, is that an indictment on former coach Mario Cristobal’s recruiting ability? Or are these players talented enough, but because the team’s performance on the field was underwhelming (likely also due to Cristobal) they didn’t get the recognition they deserved from scouts/analysts? Or, is this just an issue where NFL general managers made a mistake?
The answer to these questions is probably some combination of everything, although time will be the biggest tell.
Fortunately, the team Dan Lanning worked for last year had five players taken in just the first round alone, so this is hopefully not a reality Oregon fans will have to ponder for too much longer.
