When a player is not selected at the NFL draft, it’s both good and bad.
Negative for the obvious. Being picked is a dream.
But a positive can be found because these players now have a say in what team they head to, or at least they can weight their options.
Because of this, the Buffalo Bills are actually not in the best position. The Bills have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL and if you’re someone trying to make a team, Buffalo is already pretty full.
Still, Pro Football Focus thinks the Bills found a way to land at least one promising undrafted rookie.
The football analytics outlet ranked the top-100 undrafted rookies not picked at the 2022 draft. Buffalo landed one of them, Texas A&M tight end Jalen Wydermeyer.
Overall, PFF ranked Wydermeyer the 44th best UDFA.
It’s unsurprising to see the Bills have interest in Wydermeyer because they did have a pre-draft visit with him last month.
At 6-foot-4 and 255 pounds, Wydermyer has an excellent build for the NFL. The A&M prospect displayed an ability as a playmaker in college, notching two very similar, back-to-back seasons the last two years. In each, Wydermyer surpassed 40 catches and 500 yards.
NFL.com admitted Wydermyer is an “athletic” tight end with “smooth separation skills” prior to the draft. However, his drops and blocking abilities are in question.
Wydermyer was just one of several tight ends Buffalo met with. They ended up not selecting one at the draft, but Wydermyer might have a decent chance to make the final roster in training camp.
Wydermyer is not going to surpass Dawson Knox or OJ Howard on the depth chart. If the Bills decide to keep three tight ends, Wydermyer will just have to beat out Tommy Sweeney for a roster spot. That’s a guarantee, though.
