Chris Cooley was asked by Kevin Sheehan to do some film analysis for Kevin’s podcast, “The Kevin Sheehan Show.” The two got together to discuss how Cooley evaluated Commanders draft picks Jahan Dotson and Sam Howell.
Cooley on Sam Howell:
“I thought he was great in the game against Notre Dame, made some big-time throws.”
“He’s d____ tough. He takes hits a lot. He ran the ball a lot and slid. He also ran the ball and tried to get first downs, I love that. He knew when he was trying to get a first down, and when he was playing smart. That being said, in the NFL he is going to have to get down But I don’t think he will have a problem with that.”
“I think he works the pocket fairly well. He moves in the pocket and climbs up the pocket well. He does a good job of climbing the pocket deciding to run from the center of the pocket instead of turning around backward and doing the Robert Griffin.”
“He throws the deep ball well. I really do think he throws a catchable, consistent ball. I don’t think he has a cannon arm, but he can throw it 60 yards, get it downfield. ”
“There are times he can anticipate really well, especially to his right side. He showed he is capable of looking left, sliding in the pocket, moving to his right and making the throw. Not knowing what they were running, he looks like it was 1 to 2 (reads) and then look to run.”
“As a runner he has some shiftiness to him, some speed to him. He is not slow.”
“He is going to have a huge learning curve from what he ran at North Carolina.”
“He has super-happy feet. He is bouncy, always on his toes. I’m not overly concerned about it. Up down, up down, so, ok with his accuracy, not great accuracy. Almost every throw he makes it an off-platform throw. So a lot of his intermediate passes (I am not saying he is wildly inaccurate) but it is on the back hip instead of the front hip, at the knees or above the head instead of at the chest. He is bouncing around a lot back there…
