Going into the 2022 football season, LSU Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Tigers’ roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Brian Kelly this season.

It’s time to take a look at one of the key depth pieces in the secondary in Major Burns, a Baton Rouge native who transferred in last year from a conference foe in Georgia. He appeared in five games last season as a sophomore for the Tigers, and he’ll hope for an expanded role this campaign.

Depth Chart Overview

Burns is a former top-200 recruit that returned to The Boot after his true freshman season at Georgia didn’t exactly go as planned. He appeared in six games but made just five tackles during a shortened 2020 season, and he decided to transfer to LSU following its conclusion.

Though he only saw playing time in five games in 2021 with the Tigers, he had a much bigger role. He received starting reps at safety and finished the year with 25 tackles, two pass breakups and an interception.

His path to starting in 2022 isn’t clear, though. The team added Joe Foucha, a starter at Arkansas last year, via the transfer portal. Foucha will almost certainly be a starter for the Tigers, as well, meaning Burns may have to compete with returning starter Jay Ward for a spot.

Regardless, safety is a position where LSU does not have much depth. Burns should see an increased role from a year ago, even if…
