Bryce Callahan signed a bargain 1-year contract

The Denver Broncos opted not to re-sign slot cornerback Bryce Callahan this offseason, choosing instead to sign San Francisco 49ers veteran K’Waun Williams to a two-year contract.

Callahan then signed a one-year deal with the division-rival Los Angeles Chargers, so he’s set to play against the Broncos two times this season.

On the surface, Denver’s decision to not re-sign Callahan makes sense given that he missed more games (28) than he played (21) with the Broncos due to various injuries. After learning of Callahan’s contract details, though, the decision to not re-sign him is somewhat disappointing.

Callahan will have a $1.12 million salary with the Chargers this year, according to Aaron Wilson of the Pro Football Network.

For reference, $1.12 million is the NFL’s minimum salary for a player with seven years of experience. L.A. is getting a bargain in Callahan — if he stays on the field.

Callahan’s total salary cap hit this season will be $1,047,500, according to OverTheCap.com. For comparison, Williams will have a cap hit just north of $2 million this year. It’s not a huge difference and Williams has generally had better health than Callahan, but it all adds up in a salary-capped league.

Denver might have been able to even sign both players, but they’re both slot cornerbacks so that would have created a crowded depth chart.

The Broncos ultimately chose Williams for about double what the Chargers will pay Callahan. Time will tell if it was the right decision.
