Where Tar Heels stand in latest ESPN SP+ projections

Mack Brown still a top 25 coach per CBS Sports

We are still months away from the 2022 college football season and while we have a long Summer to go, the projections are starting to roll in. The latest are from ESPN and the website’s SP+ projections.

The updated rankings from Bill Connelly feature where each team stands here in the preseason. The projections are based on three metrics:

Returning production
Recent recruiting
Recent history

Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and Michigan take the top four spots in the rankings while Clemson is the first Atlantic Coast Conference team at No. 6.

But as for the Tar Heels, ESPN projects them at No. 34 overall. The Tar Heels offensive SP+ is at 37.4 which was 11th and their defense SP+ is at 26.7 which ranks 70th. Overall, the Tar Heels stayed the same in their projection from the latest rankings in February.

This is going to be a different year for Mack Brown and his Tar Heels compared to where they were last offseason. Going into the 2021 season, the Tar Heels were a top 10 team with a lot of expectations.

Sam Howell is gone, so is starting running back Ty Chandler and a few other key pieces to the roster. But now Brown’s recruiting classes are starting to come into fruition and it’s a chance to get things back on track.
