Spencer Petras has heard it all. He has heard it every single day, week, month, and season he has been the Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback. You name it, he’s heard it.
He isn’t good enough. He can’t make throws. He isn’t mobile. He is inaccurate. The list goes on and on.
But one thing doesn’t stop. What’s that? Petras staring down the noise every single week. The Hawkeyes quarterback has never shied away from facing the music. That is a guy I want in my corner and the rest of the Hawkeyes’ offense will stand behind.
Let’s talk about a question no one has asked yet but I am going to dare to do so. What about asking if we haven’t even seen his best and what he can be? What if his ceiling is still not touched yet? There is reason to believe the Spencer Petras entering 2022 can be the very best version yet.
Let’s look into why Petras may be primed for his best season in Iowa City. The pieces are around him. The defense is there to support him. It is right there for him to take Iowa to the next level that he knows he can.
The Williams duo at running back

The duo of Gavin Williams and Leshon Williams is next in the lineup of running backs to tote the rock for the Hawkeyes. In limited action, the pair contributed a significant amount. They were the running backs in the Vrbo Citrus Bowl as Tyler Goodson prepared for the 2022 NFL draft.
Combined, the Williams combined for 140 yards on 26 carries which was good enough for a 5.3 yards per carry. That sort of output is exactly what the Hawkeyes need to set Petras up for success after a 2021 season that saw them average just 3.4 yards per carry.
Giving Petras a manageable second down is huge for success. Staying ahead of the chains allows him the confidence to throw the ball and make plays as opposed to just trying to catch up. The downhill run game also forces defenses to stay honest and give Petras favorable matchups…
