Patrick Mahomes ‘can only imagine how good’ Justyn Ross will be

Only four NFL teams medically cleared former Clemson wide receiver Justyn Ross in the draft process, but that hasn’t stopped him from making a name for himself in the league.

Signed by the Kansas City Chiefs as an undrafted free agent, Ross has had the chance to work with Patrick Mahomes, who is widely regarded as one of the league’s top signal-callers. After only a few days of organized team activities (OTAs), Mahomes and Ross seem to be working well together.

“The way he catches the football out of the air, he snatches it, there’s no drops, everything like that,” Mahomes said of Ross. “Now, it’s about him learning the NFL offense. I mean, that’s how it is for every rookie when they come in. You don’t see that top talent that they can be until they learn and they can just play fast. You’ve seen the splashes of how talented he can be, and then you see times where he’s just barely off of what we wanted, and he learns from that. He doesn’t make that same mistake. The more and more reps that he gets, I can only imagine how good he’s going to be because of the talent that he possesses.”

Before his in-depth comments about Ross in person, Mahomes also praised Ross on Twitter after the Chiefs posted a highlight of Ross making an impressive one-handed catch at OTAs.

At Clemson, Ross finished the 2021 season with 514 yards and three touchdowns on 46 receptions. Before his spinal surgery that forced him to miss his entire junior season, Ross had an impressive two-year campaign. He tallied over 1,000 yards and caught nine touchdown passes as a freshman. He followed his freshman season with an 865-yard, 66-catch year.

Now with the Chiefs, Ross has a chance to make the Chiefs’ final 53-man roster, and the encouragement from Mahomes certainly helps his case.
