TSU Tigers in the USFL: De’Andre Johnson

New Jersey Generals Outlasts Michigan Panthers In Ugly Friday Night Outing

Beginning this week, we’ll be taking a closer look at the players from Texas Southern University (TSU) currently in the United States Football League (USFL).

Leading things off for the Tigers is 26-year-old De’Andre Johnson, who was selected by the New Jersey Generals in the 12th round of the 2022 USFL Draft.

Johnson, a 6-foot-2, 188-pound quarterback out of Jacksonville, Florida, has been plagued with early-season injuries but has still managed to find plenty of time on the gridiron (more on that later).

After spending his first few years at East Mississippi Community College (passed for 2,646 yards with 26 touchdowns in one season) and Florida Atlantic University (redshirt sophomore and junior season; much of these two years were marred with injuries and hospitalizations), Johnson transferred to Texas Southern as a graduate student.

In his lone season with the TSU Tigers in 2019, Johnson racked up 1,575 yards (completing 132-of-215 passes) with nine touchdowns and three interceptions.

Johnson was not selected in the 2020 NFL Draft and played in The Spring League in 2021 for the Sea Lions, garnering 574 yards with five touchdowns and seven interceptions over a six-game span.

Bringing us to 2022, where Johnson was named the backup QB to Luis Perez at the start of the USFL season; even as a backup, he has played in six games for New Jersey and started three.

So far for the Generals this year, Johnson has amassed 600 passing yards with two touchdowns and one interception along with 273 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Fun fact: Johnson was featured in the second season of Last Chance U (Netflix documentary series) while a student at East Mississippi CC in 2016.

Due up next for Johnson and the New Jersey Generals (7-1, 1st place in North): a showdown against the Michigan Panthers (1-7, 3rd place in North) on Saturday, June 11 at 12 pm Central Time on NBC.
