When Joe Sloan made the jump from Louisiana Tech to LSU, it turned some heads.
Going from a Group of Five to a big-time SEC program is pretty standard. But Sloan, who was the offensive coordinator at Tech, only coaches the quarterbacks at LSU. Thatβs what made this hire so impressive.
On3βs Matt Zenitz recently put out a list of rising star assistant coaches in college football, and Sloan made the cut.
In the article, On3 notes that Sloan has been a candidate for a few Group of Five head coaching jobs in recent years. If he has success at LSU, theyβre sure to come calling again.
I could also see a situation where Sloan gets promoted at LSU. Mike Denbrock isnβt that young. In the future, maybe he retires or wants a reduced roll. Sloan would be the perfect candidate to step in at that point.
Sloan was Louisiana Techβs recruiting coordinator. Thatβs significant because it means he can recruit and call plays. Sometimes, we see position coaches excel at recruiting because coordinators have to spend so much time game-planning in the film room.
Sloanβs ability to do both makes him a valuable asset. Heβs got talent in that quarterback room, and thatβs where all the eyes will be when LSU opens the season against Florida State.
