The USC Trojans hosted numerous top recruits over the weekend. A crucial set of official visits marked a moment in which USC football operations — with the staff Lincoln Riley assembled — was able to roll out the red carpet for its top targets.
Since Riley’s arrival, the new coach had to scramble in December and make a lot of adjustments on the fly in early winter. He didn’t have a fully-established base of operations from which he could implement a complete recruiting plan in which everything was lined up in advance.
For 2023, it’s different. This weekend of official visits was the “pull out all the stops” showcase in which Riley and his team of internal staffers, including Annie Hanson (who came from Oklahoma to join Riley), put together an experience which promoted the USC brand.
In September, we get to see what USC’s on-field coaches are made of. This past weekend was the time when the off-field staffers behind the scenes earn their keep.
How well did it go?
By all accounts, really well.
One of the people most impressed by this weekend was USC commit Zachariah Branch, a wide receiver and the brother of 2022 USC safety Zion Branch.
He spoke boldly about his and USC’s future:
He tweeted the Fight On emoji, Lincoln Riley-style:
Big things are happening at USC. Having a full recruiting cycle for 2023 will reduce the Trojans’ dependence on the transfer portal, among many other things. Depth and quality are steadily flowing into the program.
You absolutely love to see it.
