Former Washington quarterback Alex Smith family suffers another scare

Alex and Elizabeth Smith have had enough trauma for a while.

The Smiths have announced that back in May their only daughter, Sloane, had to undergo an emergency craniotomy due to a brain tumor that was both large and malignant.

Alex announced that on May 10 Sloane was rushed to an emergency room, having experienced stroke-like symptoms. An MRI produced a diagnosis that the surgery was needed and immediately.

Smith posted on Instagram, “The 10-hour procedure was the most excruciating time of our lives. A clock has never moved so slowly. The incredible neurosurgeons @stanfordchildrens did a miraculous job and were able to remove 100% of the tumor.”

Elizabeth previously experienced so much with Alex, his requiring 17 surgeries, suffering numerous infections that reached such severity doctors actually discussed with Elizabeth the amputation of Alex’s broken leg.

Now Elizabeth and Alex have waited through tests, pathology, and differing medical opinions in learning that Sloan’s tumor was rare and malignant. The Smiths have been informed there are few documented cases as they attempt to learn what might be the best course of treatment for Sloane.

The former Washington quarterback continued, “I know we don’t post much about our kids but we felt necessary to post this and say THANK YOU. Thank you to our amazing medical team, family, friends, acquaintances and even some strangers who have touched our lives in the last month and a half. We have struggled to keep up on calls, texts, communication and trying to keep loved ones updated. This has been by far the most challenging time we have EVER been through.”
