College Football has evolved in a myriad of ways over the years, especially with aesthetics.
One of the many factors in recruiting over the last decade has been uniforms, as players feel that they play better if they look good on the field (thanks, Oregon).
Auburn, who has made very little changes to their football uniforms over the last 40 years, elected to debut two alternate helmets during the 2021 season. In addition to their traditional white helmet with navy facemasks, Auburn Football revealed a white facemask to their helmet for the Penn State game on September 18. An orange facemask was used for the Ole Miss game, and again for the Iron Bowl.
Since those tweaks were made to Auburn’s iconic helmet, which style to the players themselves prefer? Auburn Football released a video to their social media platforms on Wednesday, which showed current players revealing the choices of preferred helmet. The informal poll may surprise the traditional “lifelong” Auburn fan.
According to Clint Richardson of the Auburn Uniform Database, Auburn’s use of the orange facemask was popular during the Doug Barfield era from 1979-81. However, once Pat Dye took over the job, he ultimately scrapped the orange facemask by 1984. As for the white facemask, it had never been used until last season’s game at Penn State according to Richardson.
