Following his two seasons in the NFL
Schiano left Rutgers following the 2011 NFL season, taking a position as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After two years in the NFL, Schiano took time off and then spent three seasons with Ohio State as their head coach.
That time was spent by Schiano learning how one of the most successful programs in the country was run. From top-to-bottom, Ohio State is a machine, a juggernaut of not just a premier conference in the Big Ten but a program that consistently is in the conversation for the College Football Playoff.
Before Schiano arrived at Rutgers in 2001, he was the defensive coordinator at Miami. Much like present-day Ohio State, Miami was then a hot property in college football. Schiano adapted many of those principles and guidelines implemented at Miami for his first rebuild of Rutgers.
Now his second rebuild will take some of the lessons learned at Ohio State under head coach Urban Meyer. He talked about this in a recent interview with Pro Football Focus.
“He made it crystal clear what the mission was and then held everybody accountable to the execution of that. Again, sometimes when you’re used to having to be the guy that’s running everything, it gives you a unique perspective when you’re not and you can observe others,” Schiano said in his interview with PFF.
“And I think it gave me a unique perspective coming back.”
Last season, Rutgers went 5-8 and lost in the Gator Bowl to Wake Forest. It was Rutgers’ first bowl appearance since 2014. That season was also their first in the Big Ten.
Last week, a report from New Jersey Advanced Media said that Rutgers was ready to invest $100 million into the infrastructure around the athletic department. For Rutgers football, this could mean a new practice facility.
Schiano talked about the alignment of the university with the vision for the athletic department and the football program.
It sounded a bit Ohio State-esque.
