CU’s decision impacts more than just the Buffs

CU’s decision impacts more than just the Buffs

Despite being the Pac-12’s newest school (along with Utah), Colorado’s decision on whether to stay or leave the conference will have a major impact on the conference.

The Buffs’ most likely destination, by some reports, is the Big 12. However, there have also been talks of the Pac-12 merging with the ACC, and the Mountain West also looms in the distance.

Trojans Wire worked through every Pac-12 and ACC school and forecasted what would happen around college football if each school decides to either stay or leave.

If Colorado stays:

Colorado staying in the Pac-12 would invite an interesting question: Does this mean Utah is staying, too? Are Colorado and Utah going to move together or stay together? Or, could Utah go to the Big Ten while Colorado stays put? The likely answer: CU and Utah would be tethered. That is not, however, a guarantee.

If Colorado leaves:

If Colorado leaves the Pac-12, that means it will return to the Big 12, which it left over a decade ago to join the Pac-12. Awkward!

Say, who was the athletic director at Colorado when it left the Big 12 for the Pac-12? You might have heard the name before: Mike Bohn.

Getting back with your ex is awkward, but it might be the best scenario for the Buffs. Likewise, the Buffs’ departure would almost guarantee the Pac-12 would have to look towards the ACC, Big 12 or Mountain West to stay alive. Superconferences are coming and CU’s puzzle piece carries some weight.
