As we begin to move closer to the start of a new college football season in Happy Valley, the staff at Nittnay Lions Wire is spending some time sounding off on some big questions facing the Nittany Lions this fall. And what better place to start than with the quarterback.
Sean Clifford is entering his sixth season and is preparing to be the starting quarterback for a fourth consecutive season, a true rarity in college football. Given what has been seen of Clifford during his collegiate career, what are the realistic expectations for Clifford in 2022, and will his decision to return be looked upon fondly at the end of the season? Or will fans be clamoring for Drew Allar or Christian Veilleux at some point this season?

Sean Clifford struggled a lot last year. One thing that I did like about his game was his ability to get multiple players involved in Penn State’s offense. It wasn’t just the Jahan Dotson show. It was Parker Washington, Brenton Strange, Theo Johnson, etc. It shocked many when Clifford announced his return to Happy Valley for a sixth season. Last year, Clifford threw for over 3,000 yards, 21 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. Although that stat line doesn’t look that bad, it didn’t look pretty on the field for a few games when it mattered the most. Sure, Clifford certainly does have some pros to his game. His ability to extend plays with his athleticism does stand out, like in 2021 against Villanova and Indiana for example.
Clifford will also have Washington and Western Kentucky transfer Mitchell Tinsley for the 2022 season, his best receiver core since likely KJ Hamler, Dotson, and DaeSean Hamilton. Clifford also needs help from his offensive line to get the passing game going, an area that struggled immensely. If I had to make a prediction right now for the 2022 season, I would say his stat line would be just shy of 3,000 yards. Many of their tough matchups are on the road, including Michigan and
