Top 8 salary cap bargains for 2022

Top 8 salary cap bargains for 2022

The Washington Commanders made a big move last week when they signed star wide receiver Terry McLaurin to a three-year, $71 million extension, keeping him in Washington through 2025.

The McLaurin contract was the second major contract for the Commanders this offseason. In March, Washington traded draft picks to the Indianapolis Colts for veteran quarterback Carson Wentz and his $28 million salary for 2022. If Wentz succeeds, the Commanders have him under contract for two more seasons under reasonable salaries for a starting quarterback.

Some of Washington’s other moves this offseason were allowing guard Brandon Scherff to depart in free agency and releasing guard Ereck Flowers and defensive tackle Matt Ioannidis.

After all those moves, Washington currently has $11.8 million remaining salary cap room for the 2022 season.

Who are Washington’s top bargains for 2022?

Here are the Commanders’ top eight salary cap bargains for 2022.

A seventh-round pick in 2020, safety Kamren Curl quickly emerged as a key performer for Washington. Now, two years later, he’s one of the team’s top defenders. Curl will count less than $1 million against the salary cap in 2022 and will be eligible for a contract extension after the 2022 season.

DT Jonathan Allen: $9.5 million

Jonathan Allen enters his sixth NFL season in 2022, and the four-year, $72 million extension he signed last summer kicks in this season. Allen, coming off his first Pro Bowl in 2021, is one of the NFL’s best interior defensive linemen and $9.5 million is a bargain for that type of player.

WR Terry McLaurin: $7.3 million

Terry McLaurin will count over $7 million against Washington’s salary cap in 2022. Fresh off signing the new extension, McLaurin was scheduled to earn less than $4 million in 2022. Either way, that’s a major bargain for one of the NFL’s best wide receivers.
