Re-grading the Steelers 2017 NFL draft

We are heading into our sixth NFL season for the Pittsburgh Steelers 2017 NFL draft class. Typically at this point players have either moved into another contract, moved on to another team or moved on from the league.

· Round 1, No. 30: T.J. Watt, OLB, Wisconsin

The Steelers landed the best defensive player in the NFL with the No. 30 overall pick.

· Round 2, No. 62: JuJu Smith-Schuster, WR, USC

Smart, physical, highly-productive slot receiver who has moved on to the Kansas City Chiefs.

· Round 3, No. 94: Cameron Sutton, CB, Tennessee

Philip G. Pavely-USA TODAY Sports

A versatile defensive back who can start at both cornerback and safety. Should be team’s slot CB in 2022.

· Round 3, No. 105: James Conner, RB, Pittsburgh

Local hero who never quite found his place with the Steelers. Having a great rebound in his career with the Cardinals.

· Round 4, No. 135: Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee

Highly intelligent, athletic quarterback who is like an extra coach on the roster. Currently in the mix to be the starter or No. 2 in Cleveland.

· Round 5, No. 173: Brian Allen, CB, Utah

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Long, athletic defensive back who could never learn the position. Currently with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions.

· Round 6, No. 213: Colin Holba, LS, Louisville

A puzzling pick from the beginning, Holba didn’t make it through a season with the Steelers and recently retired from the NFL after being on six rosters.

· Round 7, No. 248: Keion Adams, LB, Western Michigan

Athletic guy who never caught on as a pass rusher with the Steelers. Playing in Canada for the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Overall

Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

You can’t grade any group low when you get Watt with the No. 30 pick. And just because Smith-Schuster and Conner aren’t with Pittsburgh anymore doesn’t mean they weren’t still great picks. The fault is not in keeping the players and cultivating that talent. Sutton has quietly been a solid player and is on a short list to be a breakout candidate in 2022.

Grade: A
