McLaurin ‘knocking on the door’ of superstardom

McLaurin ‘knocking on the door’ of superstardom

Washington Commanders wide receiver Terry McLaurin got paid last week. Washington’s No. 1 wideout signed a three-year, $71 million extension that made him one of the NFL’s highest-paid pass-catchers.

McLaurin is thrilled and relieved to remain in Washington. Of all of the top wide receivers who signed new deals or are up for new contracts this offseason, perhaps none were more important to their team than McLaurin.

No one is saying McLaurin is better than Davante Adams or Tyreek Hill right now. However, McLaurin’s impact on the Commanders goes well beyond the 17 games on the schedule.

McLaurin is Washington’s most popular player. He’s a homegrown star who went from third-round pick to one of the top wide receivers in the NFL. His character, leadership and work ethic make him an exceptional teammate and coach’s dream. The Commanders couldn’t afford to lose him for various reasons, considering the negative publicity centered on owner Daniel Snyder.

But is McLaurin viewed as a superstar around the NFL?

Dan Hanzus of NFL.com recently unveiled his superstar club for 2022, where some new players joined the club while some of the old guard dropped off the list. Hanzus picked 10 receivers for his exclusive club, with McLaurin falling just outside the top 10.

Mike Evans, CeeDee Lamb and Tee Higgins joined McLaurin in the next group.

The wide receiver position in the NFL is deeper than it’s ever been. Rankings are always subjective. Washington fans can point to many reasons why McLaurin is already a superstar, considering three straight brilliant seasons with eight different starting quarterbacks and the lack of a bonafide No. 2 wide receiver.

McLaurin has Carson Wentz as his quarterback for 2022 and perhaps beyond. That’s an exciting proposition for McLaurin.

Regardless of where you rank McLaurin, expect him to continue posting impressive numbers with some stability at quarterback.
