5 Hawkeyes to watch on offense entering 2022 fall camp

Football is almost here, and if there’s one thing Hawkeyes fans are hoping for, it’s a better offense. The defense was not a problem at all last year, and should continue to be an area of strength with a large amount of starters returning in 2022. The offense, however… yeah, it wasn’t nearly as good. The Hawkeyes struggled to run, they couldn’t pass, and it really soured a special season by the other side of the ball.

A rough season doesn’t mean there cannot be improvement, though. The Iowa offense is a good mix of returning youngsters with a year of Big Ten experience under their belts as well as veteran leaders.

247Sports’ Sean Bock recently took a look at five offensive players to watch for the Hawkeyes throughout fall camp. Let’s take a stab at our own five offensive players to keep an eye on for Iowa throughout camp.

Spencer Petras, quarterback

Pretty much everything comes down this year to the quarterback play. While Iowa has never been a quarterback factory like Philadelphia, the play at the position is an essential factor in just how far Iowa goes this year. Spencer Petras has not been great in his two years as a starter. He was unable to top 2,000 passing yards last season, managed just 10 touchdowns through the air, and completed less than 60% of his passes.

Despite this, Iowa still has managed to win. Last year, the Hawkeyes were a 10-4 team, at one point appearing to be national contenders. The year before, they finished 6-2. They have a good baseline, but in order to really compete for the Big Ten championship, the quarterback play has to be better. There have been glowing reports about Petras from his trainer all offseason. Great! Now, let’s see it in action this fall camp.
