The 2022 college football season is only 43 days away (yes, you read that correctly) and as we begin to make our way through various depth charts, camp battles, and critical week-to-week matchups of the teams we love, there is always one game known as a “trap game” or your basic upset that presents itself as un-concerning on paper, but is anything but come game day.
Every year, a handful of playoff contenders tend to take these opponents for granted due to being either unprepared for the harsh road game environment, dismissing a team’s lack of star power, or looking weeks ahead instead of focusing on the matchup that week.
One of the most recent examples is the 2021 Alabama vs. Texas A&M game at Kyle Field, where the Aggies stunningly upset the Tide 41-38. After a 3-2 start while going 0-2 in SEC play, The Aggies were searching for answers, while Alabama, ranked No.1 at the time, was undefeated as usual and outscoring opponents 228-91, looking to dismantle Jimbo Fisher once again who was 0-4 in his career against the all mighty Nick Saban going into the game.
For the 2022 season, Athlon Sports has selected the most noteworthy trap games for a group of college football playoff contending teams, which include Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Clemson, Texas A&M, Michigan, Notre Dame, Utah, USC, Oregon, Baylor, and NC State. The Aggies are looking to rebound from a disappointing 8-4 season, with a schedule that does not do them any favors in terms of preparing for the SEC gauntlet starting with their week 4 matchup against Arkansas.
Here is Athlon Sports’ list of trap games for the 13 playoff contenders as we near the 2022 college football season:
