Pairs of schools are likely, but not guaranteed, to remain together

It is logical to assume that in the larger workings of college sports realignment, Stanford and the California Golden Bears will wind up in the same conference, whether they are going to the Big Ten or remaining in the Pac-12 (10).

It is similarly logical to think that Duke and North Carolina will either both go to the Big Ten or stay in the ACC.

Florida State and Miami will either stay in the ACC or go to the SEC.

Pairs of schools seem like natural candidates to remain together in a conference, regardless of what happens with other schools and conferences. The inclination to think they’ll stay together is reasonable.

Will this actually happen, though? Are there scenarios which could potentially split up these pairs and lead to a fascinating and unexpectedly different configuration of the realignment landscape in college sports?

We discussed these questions and more with college sports consultant — and USC alumnus — Tony Altimore on The Voice of College Football, hosted by Mark Rogers.
