Panthers’ Taylor Moton cracks Touchdown Wire’s top OT list

Earlier today, we told you about how ESPN left Carolina Panthers hog molly Taylor Moton off their oh-so-exclusive offensive tackle list. Sure, they gave him an “honorable mention” nod, but does he deserve more recognition than that?

Well, our own Doug Farrar thinks he does. In continuing his offseason positional rankings, the Touchdown Wire editor slotted Moton in at No. 8— fresh off what he believes was the 27-year-old’s best pro campaign yet.

“Moton may have been a Secret Superstar in 2020,” Farrar writes. “Now, the secret is out. The Panthers signed Moton to a four-year, $72 million contract extension in July, 2021, and Moton responded with his best season to date. On an offensive line in which he was the only above-average player, Moton allowed one sack, four quarterback hits, and 22 quarterback hurries on 719 pass-blocking reps — and that was with Sam Darnold, P.J. Walker, and the pretty-much-cooked version of Cam Newton at quarterback.”

(Pretty-much-cooked? Geez, Doug. No need for strays.)

Anyway, there’s nothing cooked about Moton—who, as we’ve alluded to already, is one of just five players to play every one of their team’s offensive snaps in each of the past four seasons. And hopefully that continues for Carolina in 2022, even with a new (and perhaps not cooked) quarterback under center.

“The Panthers now have Baker Mayfield in the fold, and an offensive line that has been upgraded at several positions,” Farrar adds. “Right tackle was one of the few positions on this offense that didn’t need an overhaul, and Moton may have been this team’s best offensive player in 2021.”

Although that’s not saying much considering how broken Carolina’s offense was, it’s still a fine compliment for the one constant this organization has fielded on that group of late.
