No. 15: Who is the toughest competition in the NFC East?
Matt Citak: An argument could be made here for each of the Giants’ divisional opponents. The Philadelphia Eagles are a popular pick in the media to win the division as many believe quarterback Jalen Hurts could make a big Year 3 jump. Meanwhile, if Carson Wentz can stay healthy all season, the Washington Commanders could push for the NFC East crown. However, it appears like the Giants’ toughest competition in the division is still the Dallas Cowboys.
Last year’s NFC East champions, the Cowboys went undefeated in the division, beating the Giants, Eagles and Commanders twice each. They cruised to a 12-5 record before falling to the San Francisco 49ers during Wild Card Weekend, but don’t let the early playoff exit fool you as their offense was firing on all cylinders last season. Dallas ranked No. 1 in the NFL in both points and yards per game, as Dak Prescott returned to the field after a serious leg injury in 2020 and looked like his old self. Even with Amari Cooper now on the Cleveland Browns, this Cowboys offense should pick up right where it left off last season.
On the other side of the ball, Dallas enjoyed plenty of success in 2021 on defense as well. Their 21.1 points allowed per game ranked No. 7 in the league, while their 34.1 third down conversion percentage allowed was the second-best mark in the NFL. There is a reason why some project the Cowboys as the favorites to win the NFC East as they look to become the division’s first repeat champion in nearly 20 years.
