Going into the 2022 college football season, Tar Heels Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the North Carolina roster.
Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for Mack Brown this season.
Ja’Qurious Conley comes into the 2022 season as one of UNC’s most consistent players on the defensive end. Conley heads into his junior year returning from a season-ending injury the year prior that was suffered during the opening kick of the 34-14 win against Wofford in the 11th game of the season.
In those 11 games, Conley finished with 46 tackles, two interceptions, and a fumble recovery. Along with his ball-hawking skills, the Jacksonville native spent time returning kicks, failing to reach the end zone but still giving UNC solid field position with 197 yards on nine kickoff returns.
Looking ahead, Conley’s consistency is what separates him from the rest of the pack. He’s a sure tackler and often creates detours in the opposing receiver routes giving UNC additional time to attack the quarterback. This should be the break-out year for Conley that UNC fans have dreamed of when he committed to Carolina back in August of 2019.
