Ranking Wisconsin’s Transfer Portal Additions by Potential Impact

The transfer portal has forever changed the college football landscape. It serves as a valuable tool for programs in transition to fill perceived weaknesses on the roster with better, more experienced players looking for new opportunities.

However, it also serves as a double-edged sword that can gut a program of its most prominent talent and deplete its depth.

This offseason, the Badgers lost several players to the portal but also secured commitments from six scholarship transfers, who are all expected to make an immediate impact this upcoming season.

Today, BadgersWire ranks Wisconsin’s transfer portal additions in order of their potential impact for the 2022 season:

Jay Shaw, a 5-foot-11, 190-pound cornerback, has spent the last four seasons playing for the UCLA Bruins.

In 2021, he registered 22 tackles, four pass deflections, two interceptions, and a forced fumble en route to being named second-team All-Pac 12, playing primarily as a boundary corner.

The UCLA transfer brings invaluable experience to UW’s CB room, having played more than 400 snaps in the past three seasons. According to PFF, Shaw was the 19th highest graded CB in the country last year.

In 2022, Shaw enters fall camp as the presumed favorite to start on the boundary for UW opposite Alexander Smith. His addition should be a significant boon for what was an otherwise inexperienced CB room.

2. Justin Clark, CB
