It’s an interesting spot to be in for an Oklahoma Sooners quarterback. For several years, the Sooners have had the unquestioned top quarterback in the Big 12. While some, like Bleacher Report, believe the Sooners to have the best quarterback situation in the Big 12. Others, like the Big 12 media, aren’t so sure.
The Big 12 media selected Oklahoma State’s Spencer Sanders as the preseason All-Big 12 team quarterback, following up a season where he was the first team quarterback in 2021.
In Athlon Sports preseason Big 12 quarterback rankings, Dillon Gabriel was ranked No. 2 in the conference behind Sanders.
… the staff wasted no time in finding another capable signal-caller, as Gabriel is poised to emerge as one of the top quarterbacks in the Big 12 after spending the last three years at UCF. The Hawaii native became the starter for the Knights as a freshman in ’19, throwing for 3,653 yards and 29 touchdowns to just seven picks under coach Josh Heupel and coordinator Jeff Lebby. Gabriel was even more productive (3,570 yards and 32 TDs) as a sophomore but suffered a season-ending clavicle injury last season that limited him to just three games. Gabriel has good touch (60 percent in ‘20) as well as the arm to stretch teams (14 TDs of 20-plus yards in ’20). And with Lebby calling the plays now at Oklahoma, the transition should be relatively minimal, allowing Gabriel an opportunity for a fast start in ’22. – Steve Lassan, Athlon Sports
Rounding out the top five are J.T. Daniels of West Virginia, Quinn Ewers of Texas, and Adrian Martinez of Kansas State. Four of the top five quarterbacks in Lassan’s rankings transferred into the conference.
Dillon Gabriel may not have been as heavily recruited as the quarterbacks he’s replacing, but he’s proven to be a good quarterback in his two-plus years of experience in the college ranks.
