USC isn't playing a Big Ten schedule this year, but adjustments are around the corner

USC doesn’t have to figure out game plans and lines of attack for Big Ten teams in 2022 or 2023, but it will certainly have to structure itself and measure itself against Ohio State and Wisconsin and other Big Ten teams in two years.

We all know the Big Ten has a specific identity in both football and basketball. There’s a way of playing in that conference which is different from others.

USC analyst Josh Webb offered more reflections on this larger overall point:

“How does USC establish success in a new conference? It starts with Lincoln Riley and his offense,” Webb said. “How Riley approaches things will be very different in the Pac-12 than in the Big Ten. The competition in the Pac-12 is inferior to the level of play he will see from teams in the Big Ten. Consider how Riley could attack teams in the Pac-12 and then the Big Ten. He will need to adjust, given that the Big Ten is more defensive in nature than the Pac-12. The wrong game plan in Iowa will play out very differently from the wrong game plan in Corvallis. It will be up to Riley’s brilliant mind to figure out a way to succeed in each conference.”
