49ers 53-man roster prediction after training camp begins

The 49ers opened training camp Wednesday so it’s time for an updated 53-man roster projection!

While we haven’t gotten a ton of new information, there have been a handful of injury updates and a couple minor roster moves since our last projection.

Here’s our updated guess at the active roster come Week 1:

Quarterback (2)

Trey Lance

No changes here. Jimmy Garoppolo is on his way out and the 49ers won’t want rookie seventh-round pick Brock Purdy working as Lance’s backup.

Elijah Mitchell
Trey Sermon
Tyrion Davis-Price
Jeff Wilson Jr.

No changes since our last projection. JaMycal Hasty certainly has a shot to play his way onto the roster, especially since he can return kicks. For now, 2021 third-round pick Sermon gets the nod.

There might not be a bigger lock on the roster than this. Former undrafted free agent Josh Hokit is the other option, but he’s likely a practice squad add.

Wide receiver (6)

Deebo Samuel
Brandon Aiyuk
Jauan Jennings
Ray-Ray McCloud
Danny Gray
Malik Turner

Small change to this group with one WR added. The top three with Gray, a rookie third-round pick, seem to be locked in. Ray-Ray McCloud has the inside track to a roster spot too. Depending on how the offseason goes the 49ers may opt to keep a sixth WR. This time we kept an extra one and it goes to Malik Turner, who has played a ton of special teams in his career.

Tight end (3)

George Kittle
Ross Dwelley
Charlie Woerner

Only three tight ends this time. Woerner is on the PUP list to start camp, but we’re projecting he’ll be back in time for the regular season. Tyler Kroft and Tanner Hudson are two players that jump out as potential replacements if Woerner can’t start the season healthy.

Offensive line (9)

Trent Williams
Mike McGlinchey
Colton McKivitz
Daniel Brunskill
Aaron Banks
Jaylon Moore
Spencer Burford
Nick Zakelj
Jake Brendel

Alex Mack retired since our last guess at the 53-man roster. That opened a spot for Zakelj, a 2022 sixth-round pick. San Francisco could keep a 10th OL depending on how they feel…
