Giants work on 3rd down, red zone


* When the team gets into team drills there is a real feeling of pressure that the defense is putting on the offense to execute at a high level – and we’re not specifically talking about pocket pressure. Heavy blitzes force the offensive line, tight ends and running backs to be on their assignments, but it is also felt in the secondary. On most plays, there aren’t easy catches available downfield and there’s a high level of competition that should bring the best out of both sides of the ball.

* Tyrod Taylor will turn 33 years old next Wednesday, but he still moves around like a much younger man. Taylor consistently escaped with quickness and speed when the second-team defensive line got penetration. He is adept at making accurate throws on the move or running for yards himself. Second-yard player Elerson Smith was one of those players spotted in the backfield at least a couple times for what could have been sacks in live situations.

* During the first team period, Daniel Jones hit a receiver over the middle for what would have been a big gain but Julian Love closed quickly on the play and knocked the ball out. Later in the practice, Golladay got some payback when he caught a deep crossing route over the middle for what was the biggest play of practice up to that point.

* Collin Johnson took that crown from Golladay during the final move-the-ball period for the second team, catching a deep ball over the top from Tyrod Taylor down the left sideline. Wide receiver Austin Proehl finished that series with a touchdown.

* In the final move-the-ball” period for the first unit, Brian Daboll made the offense and defense do some conditioning (running) before competing on one last goal line stand. Wide receiver Darius Slayton answered by catching a touchdown pass from Daniel Jones. Richie James caught a touchdown pass from Jones on a previous possession that wound up in the end zone.
