Over the years, Alabama has had to out-recruit premier programs to land some of the best prospects from all across the country. Some of the more notable recruiting battles over the years have been against Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs.
Smart was once the defensive coordinator at Alabama and was one of the program’s top recruiters year in and year out. His defenses were always top-notch because of the players he helped bring in. Now, the times have changed and Smart is the head coach at Georgia. Since making the move, he has taken the recruiting world by storm. However, he has lost his fair share of recruiting battles to Alabama over the years.
Coach Saban and his coaching staff have done an excellent job recruiting in Georgia over the years. Today, Roll Tide Wire takes a look at the rivals’ recruiting battles and particularly the ones that fell in Alabama’s favor.
Mack Wilson (LB)

The Alabama coaching staff made an extreme effort to land Wilson. The native of Montgomery, Alabama was down to Georgia and Alabama in the end. Ultimately, he chose Alabama on National Signing Day. The decision worked out for Wilson, as he went on to have a successful career with the Tide. Over the course of three seasons, he played in 33 games and recorded 113 tackles. He spent some time with the Cleveland Browns and is now with the New England Patriots.

I think it is safe to say that Smith’s decision was possibly the best one. After being committed to Georgia for five months, Smith decided to open his recruitment back up. He took several visits to Alabama, LSU, and Florida State. However, it was the Tide that landed him in the end. He would go on to win the Biletnikoff Award as well as the prestigious Heisman Trophy.
