The safety position for the Colorado Buffaloes is a hard one to get a handle on this year. There is one returning starter but everything else remains up in the air in Boulder.
There has been an influx of transfer players, freshman signees, as well as players moving from other positions. It is my opinion that this group will see a lot of different faces playing in spots while Karl Dorrell tries to figure out who fits best.
Let’s try and untangle the threads of this group of safeties. Below is our projected depth chart, followed by some analysis:

Breakdown
Isaiah Lewis is an entrenched starter and will be the leader of the group. Lewis had an impressive season last year, leading the team with 79 tackles. If all goes well, those numbers should go down giving Lewis more of a chance to impact the passing game instead of solely supporting the run as the last line of defense.
Trevor Woods will be the first up to join him in the safety grouping. Woods, a true sophomore, got 10 games of experience last season on defense and as a special teams monster. Toren Pittman and Tyrin Taylor are both listed as safeties this year after getting time at the cornerback spot last year.
