Mike McDaniel explains why former Rutgers star Mohamed Sanu was signed

Former Rutgers football wide receiver Mohamed Sanu signed with the Miami Dolphins earlier this week. It is the type of move that can provide a good foundation for a young group of Dolphins wide receivers, this as the franchise legitimately hopes to make a push for the playoffs in 2022.

Sanu is a proven veteran wide receiver. Set to enter his eleventh season in the NFL, he has 435 receptions for 4,871 receiving yards and 27 receiving touchdowns.

First-year head coach Mike McDaniel explained this week why it made sense for the Dolphins to bring in Sanu.

“I think it’s not about what necessarily we needed as much as it was about an opportunity to add a veteran that I know from this being my third stop. I think it is one of, it’s like almost a coaching sin to get ahead of yourself and think, at least in my opinion, I think you owe it to players and the team to compete,” McDaniel told reporters.

“So what does that manifest moving forward? I can’t really say in that regard. What I do know is that we have a very, very young team. I’m not sure if you can stamp this, but I believe I, at one point in the offseason, I read that we were about 60 percent Year 3 or less. So a guy that knows how to do it, that can set the tone, who’s a physical player, who has passion for the game, I think that just adds value to the team regardless of the position.”

The Dolphins are an intriguing team in the AFC East but they certainly have a recent history that has been anything but successful. Miami hasn’t made the playoffs since 2016 and hasn’t won a postseason game since 2000.

Sanu, a former Rutgers football standout, was a third round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2012 NFL draft. He was a first-team All-Big East selection in 2011.

Last season in eight games with the San Francisco 49ers, Sanu had 15 catches for 177 yards.
