Joe Mixon catching passes already big part of Bengals training camp

Joe Mixon’s usage in the passing game has been a hot topic around the Cincinnati Bengals pretty much since he entered the league in 2017.

That isn’t going to change, even a year removed from his getting 48 targets last year, the second-highest mark of his career.

Fitting, then that the first few days of training camp this year have featured plenty of Mixon as a receiver out of the backfield. Maybe some of that has to do with this being the early stages of camp or the fact it’s Brandon Allen instead of Joe Burrow under center.

Either way, the calls and even the matchups at Back Together Saturday let him put on a show through the air against big defensive backs:

The Bengals have some interesting ways to go at running back through the air as Chris Evans heads into his second season, but there’s at least no reason to think Mixon’s usage there would suddenly shrink.

Add this to the idea the improved offensive line will be creating wider running lanes than ever and it’s safe to justify all the hype behind Mixon right now.
