Lincoln Riley knows what he has in Caleb Williams

If Lincoln Riley does succeed at USC, don’t call it automatic

Caleb Williams is the centerpiece of the USC Trojans’ remodel this season. He is also the best example of the new era of college football economics for athletes. He is a transfer from Oklahoma who already has several endorsement deals and is top-five in NIL money despite starting only eight college games.

Lincoln Riley talked about Williams at Pac-12 media day. On3 Sports gathered Riley’s assessments of his hugely talented quarterback:

“I think it’s important for everybody to remember, he’s still young in his career. I mean, Caleb has played half of a college football season. He played it in a major university under a lot of scrutiny, played in some big games and big moments. That’s going to certainly help him. There’s no question he’s ready for this moment and ready for this challenge.

The former Elite 11 MVP in 2020 then flourished in 2021. He finished his freshman year with 21 passing touchdowns, 6 rushing touchdowns, and only 4 interceptions.

Riley knows he has a special player:

“Caleb has a great skill set. He does. That was pretty apparent the first time that I saw him. You get a lot of guys that are really athletic quarterbacks but maybe leave something to be desired with accuracy or arm talent, or vice versa. Caleb is one of the rare young guys that has elite ability with both. Then I think for those of you that maybe got a chance to be around him a little bit, he’s got a very magnetic personality. He’s a guy that can get in any scenario, any room, feel comfortable, get along with people, be very present, has a great way with people. I think you got the makings of a potentially great leader and a really great player.”

Caleb Williams will be surrounded by even more talent and an even better coaching staff than he had last year at Oklahoma. Expectations and hype are the only question marks for the kid from D.C.
