Defensive coaches take the mic

Texas A&M held its annual football media day comprised of the entire coaching staff including head coach Jimbo Fisher, offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey, defensive line coach Elijah Robinson, co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach James Coley, and defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin. A select group of players also took questions including offensive lineman Layden Robinson, running back Devon Achane, punter Nik Constantinou, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper after a combined four practices have been held since the start of camp last Wednesday.

After Jimbo Fisher answered a litany of questions regarding the progress made in practice this week, it was time for the assistant coaches to take questions. Focusing on the defensive side of the ball, Defensive line coach Elijah Robinson began by answering questions about the 2022 class, a bulk of which belong on the defensive line, and the opportunity new players have to fill the spots of last season’s defensive leaders:

“They were the best in the country as far as high school players. You have to focus on ordinary things. You can’t skip ahead.”

“We lost some really good players. We all know that. These guys that have been here have a great chance to be behind those guys that left. They watched the way that (DeMarvin Leal) and Micheal Clemons worked. They know how to work hard.”

Robinson continued by joining the chorus of admiration for junior nose tackle McKinnley Jackson, stating:

“I think he started off as a guy that watched Jayden Peevy and watched those guys. Now, he’s an older guy. I think he’s embracing the role as a leader, and I’m watching the younger guys gravitate to him.”

After Darrell Dickey and James Coley took the stand to discuss the offense, Defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin was the final coach to take questions, starting off by discussing his career move to Texas A&M, and the potential of the 2022 defense regaining the “Wrecking Crew” stature:
